A Noose Found at University of Michigan Employee's Desk

The University of Michigan’s staffs were shocked at the discovery of a noose. The discovery happened on Thursday, June 20 and what more shocking is that; the noose was found at an employee’s desk.

University of Michigan’s police spokeswoman, Heather Young, stated that the desk is actually a shared workspace, which means two employees are using the desk. Hence, it is still unknown who was ‘attacked’ by the nose between the two.

Noose itself is a symbol of discrimination for African Americans and it is one of the most powerful visual symbols. Back in the early twentieth century, a noose is used to intimidated or harass African-Americans (but sometimes to other minorities as well). During that time, the noose could be visualized by a drawing or rendering, but the real noose would appear to intimidate African-Americans.

Although the biggest possibility is the employees are African-Americans and the noose was used to intimidate them, Young stated that she could not reveal the race or the ethnicity of the employees. She added that the FBI is aware of this situation and currently conduct an investigation regarding the case. There are thousands of surveillance cameras as well, so they hope they could catch the suspect soon.

In addition, the dean of the University of Michigan Medical School Dr. Marschall S. Runge immediately took an action for this case. He wrote a message to faculty and staff which said that the noose is a symbol of hate and discrimination, and the act will not be tolerated. He also stated they will conduct an investigation anytime soon.
