A Finnish Company Creates Food Using Thin Air

Cooking a food using thin air? Is that even possible? Apparently, it is possible for a startup company from Finland. Solar Food is the name of the company and it is a Finnish tech company. It turns out that their job is to create new food without agriculture. It sounds unbelievable, but that’s what they really do. Thin air is only one of their ingredients to make foods, though. Other than air, they are using water and electricity as well. They even discovered their own protein (known as alternative protein) called Solein. Solar Foods has only been in the business for two years, but they are already featured in big websites such as The Guardian and BBC, due to their unique invention.

The company claimed that Solein is 100 more climate-friendly compare to other proteins such as meat and plants. To create this food, Solar Foods use energy to split water cells and mix it into hydrogen and oxygen. After that, the ‘batter’ is mixed with CO2, potassium, sodium, and other nutrients. The mixture is being fed to microbes right after, hence it became an edible ingredient. In addition, Solar Foods claimed that their food contains of 20% - 25% carbohydrates, 5% - 10% fat and 50% protein.

Solar Food revealed their intention of creating this food is not for profit and business only. They stated they are here to help people around the world. Solar Foods added that there are places where the local people cannot eat good-protein-food due to climate change. With the invention of Solar Foods, they hope people across the world will be able to (at least) get enough nutrients.
