“Aladdin is Worth Our Money”, Review Says

A few days before officially aired on May 24 in theaters, the anticipated Aladdin remake has reaped its first positive critics so far. Many say the movie is ‘satisfying’.

One thing that received most of the praise is Will Smith’s appearance as Genie in the movie, as reported by People.

The popular movie website IndieWire writes that Smith’s performance is the standout one. He gave a great effort in his performance that it became easy for him to deliver small yet valuable joys. The site adds if there was no such thing, it seems like the entire movie would suffer.

This statement is agreed by Variety, that states the production team has taken a smart decision by creating the Genie character based on Smith’s personality instead of imitating Robin Williams who used to be the voice performer of the character in its animated movie. The review also says it is a good thing to see Smith’s loud and clear persona reverted by his comedic mode. The Guardian even calls the adaptation as lively, colorful, and genuinely funny.

While on The Hollywood Reporter, reviewer Frank Scheck greatly admires the diversity of the lead performers that the movie offers—as it was combining Egyptian, South Asian, Dutch-Tunisian, Iranian, and African-American backgrounds. He says this combination, as well as the female empowerment themes, succeeded in making the movie becomes perfectly politically correct for these times.
