“Rocketman” Blasts Off at Cannes

CANNES - Biopic genre is taking the world by storm. Starting last year with “Bohemian Rhapsody” a biopic movie telling the world about “untold” yet abridged stories about Queen and mainly its lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury, some people suddenly came with idea that the world should know the “untold” stories about some artists too, particularly gay or controversial artists.

As “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a hit among the youngsters and the hardened Queen fans, “Rocketman” also received a really warm welcome at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival at Cannes, France (16/5).

“Rocketman” also followed the almost same trail as “Bohemian Rhapsody”, that is telling story about a gay, English singer Elton John and “might be” a series of abuse in certain forms occurred to the singer. Played by Taron Egerton – famous for playing Eggsy in "Kingsman" franchise --, “Rocketman” seems to present a typical plot as “Bohemian Rhapsody”: a dramatic, controversial, and poignant story of a man who has to make the hardest decision in his life, both in entertainment and in musical journey.

The title of the movie itself came from a Elton John’s 1972 song "Rocket Man", in the album Honky Chateau. Unlike the other John’s songs, Rocket Man was unsung for, and nobody really listened to the tune.

But, I believe now the fans will go crazy over it. Ask Brian May and Roger Taylor. When "Bohemian Rhapsody" was released, the world entered "Queen Fever" once more. Elton John could also hope for the same enthusiasm, more or less.

The audience at Cannes Film Festival gave this film a really warm welcome. At the end of the sneak peek, all the audience gave a standing ovation as reverence to the great Elton John – who was present at the screening – and to Taron Egerton, who has made the role look natural and alive.

Taron Egerton was moved to tears when the movie received a standing ovation that lasted quite long – 4 minutes straight! –, but do not compare it to the time Charlie Chaplin got the Honorary Awards in 1972 Oscar – 12 minutes straight of standing ovation --.

Criticisms slapped "Bohemian Rhapsody" hard for “exploiting” and “forging” false facts and stories about Freddie Mercury as flavorings to the movie. That might be because Freddie has left us long time ago to tell us his whole, extended stories. However, noting the fact that the great Elton John still lives and David Furnish – Elton’s spouse – also one of the directors of the movie, this problem might not occur.

Another comedy/biopic movie is also incoming, “Yesterday”. Set to release on 27 June, it tells you about what would happen, if The Beatles never existed.

“Rocketman” is blasting off to theater globally on 31 May.
