Electrical Vespa ‘Elettrica’ ready to tread Indonesia

JAKARTA - Since the Presidential Regulation no. 55 of 2019 regarding Battery Electric Vehicle for Road Transportation Program was enacted on 12 August as the legal standard for the development of electric vehicles in Indonesia, the dream for greener means of transportation is getting more realistic.

Piaggio Indonesia, the Italian-flagged transportation company distributing one of the most well-known scooters in Indonesia, Vespa, also joins in the effort to distribute eco-friendly vehicles in Indonesia with 0 carbon dioxide emission.

One of which is battery-powered electric Vespa, called Elettrica. Elettrica was introduced on the 2017 EICMA expo in Milan. The vehicles aimed to be sold for upper-class people.

With the price of Rp 100 million per unit, online pre-order can be done since early October 2018 because the production of Elettrica had started since August 2018.

However, when being asked about the plan to release the vehicle, the President Director of Piaggio Indonesia, Marco Noto la Diega, stated that he and his men would not want to be too hasty in spite of the President Regulation.

“We gladly welcome the Presidential Regulation. Elettrica is prepared to tread Indonesia, but we need to prepare certain things,” said the President Director.

He added that the preparation of garage and sales network were essential. Moreover, Piaggio Indonesia needed to prepare certain things such as mechanical training, spare-part availability, and salesperson training, asserted he.

Elettrica runs on a 4 kWh electrical motor with 5.4 HP and 200 nm torque. Following Vespa Primavera’s design, Elettrica runs purely on electrical energy, not a conventional machine. The battery-powered vehicle has two mileage variants: 100 km and 200 km (X variant). For the charging, Elettrica requires 4 hours to be fully recharged.
