66 Climate Change Protesters Arrested Outside of The New York Times Office

The climate change protest was happened on Saturday. Not until Sunday, NYPD amended the number of those arrested at protest from 70 arrests to 66. The protesters have been charged with disorderly conduct. They’re affiliated with a group called Extinction Rebellion. On their website, they described the group as an international movement with purpose to combat climate change through nonviolent protest. They also want to minimize the risk of human extinction and ecological collapse.

The speaker of the group, Eve Mosher, said that the protest was a call for attention in how news outlets cover climate change. She also said, although the newspaper have made good reports, it hasn’t treat the issue in the right manner. For the group, the newspaper should have treat it like a World War II, where there were headlines everyday. She told the CNN that Extinction Rebellion respects the work of news outlets, but they just want those outlets to be more truthful and use language people understand.

The New York Times spokeperson, Danielle Rhoades Ha, made a statement that they devote more time, staff or resources to produce deeply reported coverage. So they can help readers understand climate change. Ha also mentioned the number of published article on climate change and its effect by The New York Times in 2018, which is about 800. She said that The New York Times fully support the group’s right to express their point of view even there’s a disagreement about the news coverage.
