5G is momentous for the U.K; so, don't join Huawei: Pompeo

On Tuesday, the United Kingdom (U.K) will decide whether they will invite the Chinese tech company, Huawei, to help the country develop the 5G infrastructure. However, the U.S Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said that Britain’s sovereignty will be at risk.

Mike is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister of the U.K, Boris Johnson, with the U.K Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Dominic Raab.

Tweeting on Sunday night, Mike referred to the U.K condition as a “momentous” and retweeted the statement of the British Member of Parliament (MP), Tom Tugendhat, that sovereignty means that a nation is able to protect their data.

Tom warned the U.K that if Huawei is proven true in providing a backdoor for the Chinese government, the nation will be at loss in the future.

Last year, the United States (U.S) imposed trade restrictions on Huawei and called upon the world to jointly ban Huawei’s equipment in their network as the suspicion of espionage looms large, claiming that the Huawei provides a backdoor for the Chinese government to spy on. Huawei repeatedly denied the allegations.

Therefore, Mike’s tweet is the last attempt from the U.S to prevent the U.K from collaborating with Huawei as the statement from Downing Street said that the Huawei kit is required for an affordable 5G infrastructure development.

However, most likely, the U.K government is expected to agree on new restrictions for Huawei.

The U.K saw that there is no reason to distrust Huawei. For example, the head of MI5, Andrew Parker, said that Huawei poses no threat to British intelligence-sharing with the U.S. Moreover, if the threat is true, it can be mitigated.
