Prince William on Having Gay Kids: “It’s Absolutely Fine, But I’m Nervous About It”
Britain’s Prince William, who is second-in-line to the throne, said on Wednesday (6/26) that he wouldn’t care if one of his children is gay, but admitted he’d be worried about the persecution and pressure they might face from the society because of their royal status.The statement came when the Prince was visiting Akt (Albert Kennedy Trust), a charity which focused on the prevention of homelessness among the LGBTQ+ youth in London. The trip was organized ahead of London’s annual Pride parade and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. It was also said that the Duke of Cambridge’s visit to this LGBTQ+ youth charity was the first time by a member of the royal family.
Prince William has three children with wife Kate Middleton: George who is five years old, Charlotte who is 4, and the little one Louis who is 1.
When asked if one of them is gay, Prince William said that it’s ‘absolutely fine’ and would fully support any of their life decisions. But due to the position they’re in, particularly for his family, he expressed his parenthood worries of barriers, hateful words, persecution, and other discriminations that might come.
He admitted that he just started thinking about the issue after becoming a parent and wished that we lived in a world where it wouldn’t matter.
The chief executive of Akt Tim Sigsworth said that he was impressed by Prince William’s support and willingness to understand the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ people by referring to his children. With such personal sentiment, Sigsworth believes that it would make a massive difference.
Stonewall uprising occurred in New York (1969) when patrons of a gay bar rose up in defiance of police harassment. This moment later led to a worldwide movement for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people.
