42 Inmates Found Dead in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO – People are desperate with life in prison. The desperation comes from life sentence or death penalty that they are going to face. So hard was the pressure that they decided to kill themselves. On Monday (27/5), forty two inmates in 3 different penitentiary in Manaus, Brazil were found dead.

These 42 inmates were found dead due to asphyxia. The cause of asphyxia was unknown and no statement regarding the death of 42 inmates is released yet by the prison officials.

Just yesterday, a prison clash occurred in Manaus’ Anisio Jobim Prison Complex taking lives of 15 inmates. The motive of the clash is still unknown. Most probably it was turf war between prison gangs, but the officials had not made any statement until today.

Prison clash in Manaus runs long in history. In 2017, a gruesome, graphic turf war exploded in Manaus, resulting in the death of 176 inmates. The prison clashes in Manaus over the recent years were mostly triggerred by war between prison gangs, and drug trafficking .

While turf war often happens here, the prison intervention team is always ready to maintain order over the prison. However, lately, the riot and clash in prison is getting more frequent, which once again triggers the same question to the authority: “How did they get their weapon?”, and “Why does drug-trafficking still exist in prison?”
