4 nations take Iran to ICJ over downing of Ukraine plane
The Ukraine International Airlines flight crashed near Tehran on January 2020, killing all 176 people on board. Iran later admitted to shooting down the airliner. It said its military mistook the jet for a hostile target as military tensions were rising between Iran and the United States at the time.
The four plaintiff countries say in their application that Iran "failed to conduct an impartial, transparent, and fair criminal investigation and prosecution consistent with international law."
The document says Iran "withheld or destroyed evidence," "threatened and harassed the families of the victims seeking justice" and "conducted a sham and opaque trial."
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly wrote on Twitter on Wednesday that Iran must be held to account for its actions. She said the four nations will continue to fight for the transparency, accountability and justice that the victims' families deserve.
