2021 Mirai by Toyota: An environmental car, fueled by cow's manure

To assure its commitment to making an eco-friendly car, Toyota proposed an idea of a car fueled by cow’s manure. It is a part of Toyota’s Mirai concept, redesigned to be greener. In the new concept, it converts the dropping into hydrogen fuel. The name “Mirai” itself means “Future”.

Toyota’s Chief Technology Officer, Shigeki Terashi, speaking in the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, said that he wanted to show a revolutionary, unorthodox development of Toyota’s cars. How? By showing that the upcoming car will run on manure from a single cow for an entire year.

By the concept, it is no longer impossible that the automotive industry is moving to fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

The new Mirai will be released on sale in 2021. By design, the 2021 Mirai looks bigger than its 2014 predecessor. Until now, the 2014 Mirai has been sold up to 100,000 units. The bigger design is not without reason. It aims to increase the cruising range of the 2021 Mirai. In other words, the car can run up to 400 miles.

Toyota has been interested in converting cow’s manure into energy. In 2017, cooperating with Shells, Toyota announced the “Tri-Gen” project. Both companies wanted to establish a power plant in Long Beach, California, that relies on conversion from cattle’s manure into methane to power water, electricity, and hydrogen.

In 2018, the Tri-Gen project succeeded, making a fuel station for trucks, powered by hydrogen from the manure.
