2 South Africa soccer players at athletes' village positive for COVID
Two South African soccer players and an official of the team staying at the Tokyo Olympics athletes' village have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the organizing committee said Sunday.
The infections are the first confirmed cases among athletes in the village, fueling concern about the anti-virus measures being taken ahead of the opening of the games on Friday.
The committee said 10 people who arrived from abroad in connection with the Olympics had newly tested positive for COVID-19.
It initially did not provide details about the infected individuals such as their nationality. But the organizers later confirmed the cases among the South African players after the country's Olympics committee announced their infections.
Japan has banned overseas spectators, admitting only athletes, officials and members of the media for the games.
The new cases bring the overall tally of infections since July 1 of athletes and others connected with the games opening on Friday to 55, excluding athletes at pre-Olympic training camps in Japan.
The village in Tokyo's waterfront area, with 21 residential buildings, 3,600 rooms and 18,000 beds, opened to athletes on Tuesday.
