2 died in Diamond Princess due to COVID-19

After contracting the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), two passengers of the quarantined cruise ship in Japan, Diamond Princess, passed away. Those were the first casualties among over 600 infected onboard passengers, according to an official of Japan’s Health Ministry on Thursday.

Reported by NHK, the two Japanese people were an 87-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman. When they were rushed to the hospital on 11 and 12 February, both had already had underlying health issues. No information about them was immediately available.

Hundreds of passengers have begun disembarking from the Diamond Princess after the two-week quarantine period was over. The authorities are only releasing people tested negative for the COVID-19. However, the infectious disease experts questioned the deficiencies in the protocols on the ship and the decision to let them go despite the incoming dozens of new cases on the cruise ship.

Per Thursday, the death toll due to the COVID-19 amounted to 2,120 people, mainly came from Wuhan, Hubei Province, Central China, the ground zero of the outbreak. The virus was suspected to go viral since the end of 2019 from animals to humans.

As China’s neighboring country, Japan became the country with the most casualties due to the COVID-19 after the Diamond Princess incident. In total, there are 621 passengers tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
