Japan's health ministry says 11,196 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Tokyo on Tuesday.

The daily tally is up 2,531 from a week ago. It is the first time that the figure has exceeded 10,000 since September 14.

The ministry also confirmed 5 deaths.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines was 26. That number is up 5 from Monday.
