WHO to launch COVID-19 app today

The World Health Organization (WHO) initially planned to launch a novel coronavirus (COVID-19)-related application on Android, iOS, and website. The app, dubbed “MyHealth” will cover news, tips, warnings, and more information for the global population so they could stay updated during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

The first developmental stage of the MyHealth app will be launched on Android and iOS on Monday. The early stage of the app is being developed to provide suggestions and information regarding COVID-19.

The app was the fruition of ideas proposed by the “WHO COVID App Collective” team consisting of former employees of Google, Microsoft, experts in industrial technology, and advisors and representatives of WHO.

MyHealth will provide location-based notifications to its users. Moreover, the app also provided “self-triage” to help diagnose whether the symptoms, that the users are having, match with the COVID-19 category.

On a bigger scale, the team aims to develop the app to show the travel record of COVID-19 patients through Android and iOS phones to better understand the infection rate. However, the objective is being scrutinized to ensure users’ privacy.

Using location-based tech such as Google Maps, MyHealth allows the users to avoid people diagnosed or came in contact with a COVID-19 patient.

The app will be available in six languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
