Airlangga's takes on omnibus law on job creation

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartanto, went easy on the rejection of the omnibus law on job creation because - contrary to people's perspective - he believed that the law will be a solution to the labor crunch. Hartanto quoted that there were 30 million Indonesian people needing jobs right now, based on the number of applicants for the pre-employment card. Unfortunately, from 30 million, the government can only receive 5.6 million. Speaking on Thursday, Hartanto said that those failing the pre-employment card may find their hopes in the implementation of the omnibus law on job creation.

On the other hand, Airlangga also stated that there were "masterminds" that accommodated the demonstrations. These masterminds are not workers but elitists and intellectuals with certain agendas. How they smooth things up? By invoking people to reject the omnibus law on job creation.

Hartanto claimed that the Indonesian government already knew who these "masterminds" and sponsors are, yet he declined to point fingers. He said that the government will dispatch the police force to strictly prevent acts by the demonstrating workers that might endanger others. Therefore, the demonstration should be done by maintaining the large-scale social distancing (PSBB) amid the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The chairman of the Golkar party also asked the Indonesian people to support the implementation of the omnibus law. Hartanto said that the law will open more opportunities as investments walk in; economic growth will go by 4.5 - 5.5% in 2021 with 2 - 2.5 million of fresh job opportunities.

MANUFACTURING AND FISHERY ARE BENEFITED

Hartanto also said that manufacturing and fishery will be benefited from the omnibus law on job creation. According to the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the manufacturing industry is expecting 153 foreign investment, mostly from the United States (U.S) and China. Next, the fishery industry will also get benefit from the law as the government has simplified permits for ships.

Not only manufacturing and fishery, but also the property sector will also get the advantage because of the cheap land for people with low income, as it is written in the omnibus law. Hartanto assured that all sectors will definitely get the benefit as they will also get their investment at the right time. Currently, the government is preparing 35 government regulations (PP) and 5 presidential regulations (Perpres) as derivatives of the omnibus law.
